The RNLI's Sea Safety Team

Around 120 of the UK's lifeboat stations have a volunteer Lifeboat Sea Safety Officer (LSSO) who, as with all RNLI volunteers, come from many different walks of life, but the one thing they have in common is that they all love boats! Your Sea Safety Officer's role is to provide Safety Equipment Advice to all leisure boaters for whatever craft you take to sea from a kayak, PWC or dinghy to a sailing or motor cruiser up to 43ft.

Six RNLI safety tips for everyone who goes to sea...
Training Knowledge of your activity is essential – visit: rya.org.uk/training
Inform Tell someone ashore where you're going and when you will be back
Engine and fuel check Engine serviced? Have you sufficient fuel and spares?
Tides and weather Check the conditions before heading out – click the button at the top of the page!
Wear a lifejacket A life statement, not a fashion one – wear it!
SOS device Carry appropriate means of calling for help – VHF radio and flares as a minimum.

Sea Safety equipment advice for YOUR kayak, PWC, dinghy or boat

One of the key services of the Sea Safety Team is a FREE visit to your boat to offer advice on the safety equipment that the RNLI considers would be appropriate to carry.

The visit will also include discussions on how use safety equipment, how to maintain it (particularly lifejacket maintenance – around 35% of the lifejackets we see are faulty!) and planning for things that might go wrong out at sea.

We get a very positive feedback from those who take advantage of this service, whether a newcomer to boating or someone with many years of experience under their belt.

This is not a 'check' on your equipment nor an 'MOT' for your boat – more of an informal chat for around a hour or so, based on the experience that the RNLI, as one of the world's leading sea rescue services, has built up over many years.

What we suggest you carry takes account of your type of boat, its size and the type of use you put it to. And, if you have yet to equip your boat, or are wanting to update some of your equipment, we're more than happy to visit your boat to discuss some options before you buy.

Such a visit to your boat can take place wherever your boat happens to be – a harbour, a marina, a boatyard or your home and it is also completely confidential.

To invite us onto your boat...

...please contact Tenby Station's Lifeboat Sea Safety Officer on 01834 842672 or 07770 996574, or via e-mail: tenby@rnli.org.uk

If you don't want the full boat visit you can also contact our Sea Safety officer for advice on specific items of sea safety equipment such as lifejackets, children's lifejackets, VHF, flares, EPIRBs, PLBs etc.

Sea safety advice for clubs and organisations

The Sea Safety Team can also visit your club or organisation to give a fun and informal presentation on lifejackets or ways of calling for help at sea. If you would like to organise such a presentation, please contact our Sea Safety Officer on 01834 842672 or 07770 996574, or via e-mail: tenby@rnli.org.uk
